What You Need to Know When Moving Mobile Scaffolds

What You Need to Know When Moving Mobile Scaffolds

When it comes to working at height, mobile scaffolds are a game changer. These mobile scaffolding units can significantly increase productivity by allowing workers to easily move around the job site without having to set up new scaffolds every time they need to shift position. However, just like any scaffolding, there are strict safety standards to follow to ensure that everyone stays safe while using them. In this post, we’ll go over everything you need to know about mobile scaffolds—what they are, how to use them safely, and how Proview Aluminium Towers can help with your mobile scaffolding needs.

What Is a Mobile Scaffold?

A mobile scaffold is a type of supported scaffold mounted on wheels, designed to be easily moved from one place to another. Unlike traditional scaffolds that are fixed in one spot, mobile scaffolds give workers the freedom to change their position quickly and safely. This mobility is particularly useful in large or multi-level work environments where workers need to reach different areas without wasting time setting up new scaffolding.

Mobile scaffolds are commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair work, particularly when tasks require frequent movement between different parts of a building or structure.

Key Safety Standards for Mobile Scaffolds

Because mobile scaffolds are mobile, there are additional safety considerations to keep in mind compared to traditional scaffolding. The most important standards focus on ensuring stability and preventing accidents. Here are some of the top safety rules to follow:

  1. Inspection is Key

Before using a mobile scaffold, make sure to inspect it thoroughly. Check for any damaged parts, such as wheels, braces, or planks. Do a quick inspection before, during, and after each use, and make sure any damaged components are replaced immediately.

  1. Bracing is Essential

To prevent the scaffold from collapsing, always ensure that it is properly braced. There are several types of braces you can use:

  • Cross braces
  • Horizontal braces
  • Diagonal braces

These braces work together to secure the vertical members of the scaffold, keeping everything aligned and stable. Always pin together separate sections of the scaffold to keep them secure.

  1. Lock the Wheels Properly

Mobile scaffolds are designed to move easily, but this mobility can pose a danger if not managed properly. Always lock the wheels when the scaffold is in use to prevent it from moving unexpectedly. You can use positive wheel locks, wheel and swivel locks, or any equivalent means to secure the scaffold in place. WHS Regulation also requires that each caster has a brake to ensure safety when the scaffold is stationary.

  1. Stabilise Before Moving

Moving a mobile scaffold requires careful handling to avoid tipping or accidents. When it's time to move, stabilise the scaffold first. Always apply manual force as close to the base as possible (no more than five feet above the supporting surface). This helps keep the scaffold balanced during movement.

  1. No Riding on Scaffolds

While it may seem convenient to ride a mobile scaffold from one place to another, this is not safe unless certain conditions are met. Workers should never ride a scaffold unless the following are true:

  • The surface underneath the scaffold is level (within three degrees) and free from obstructions like pits or holes.
  • The scaffold’s height-to-base width ratio is 2:1 or less when moving (unless the scaffold is designed to exceed nationally recognised stability test requirements).
  • Outrigger frames are installed on both sides if required.
  • If a powered system is used, the speed should not exceed one foot per second.
  1. Notify Workers Before Moving

If there are workers on the scaffold, always notify them before moving it. Moving the scaffold without informing everyone involved can be hazardous, especially if workers are not prepared for the shift. Safety comes first!
